Patagonia trip from Australia: routes, seasons and costs

Plan two bases for your Patagonia trip from Australia: El Chaltén for the Fitz Roy trails and El Calafate for Perito Moreno Glacier. Both sights are in Los Glaciares National Park. Add Ushuaia if you have extra travel days. For El Chaltén hikes, aim for November to March and leave room for bad weather.

How to get to Patagonia from Australia

Book your international flight first, then match the domestic leg to the airport where you actually land. Qantas advertises Sydney to Santiago, with LATAM connections onward to Buenos Aires; LATAM also markets Melbourne–Santiago and Australia–Buenos Aires itineraries. Qantas does not advertise its own nonstop flight to Buenos Aires. Santiago to Buenos Aires may land at EZE or AEP as ticketed, so read the airport codes before putting a domestic Patagonia flight on a separate booking. Allow time for a transfer between EZE and AEP; they aren’t the same airport.

Aerolíneas Argentinas, Flybondi and JetSMART are names to compare for Argentine domestic flying; availability and baggage depend on the actual itinerary. Aerolíneas says checked luggage can be an added cost depending on fare. Check the baggage price for hiking poles, a bulky pack, or ski gear before a cheap headline fare talks you into a booking. How long to give El Chaltén, El Calafate and Ushuaia

Give all three stops roughly 10 to 12 days in Patagonia, on top of international travel and any Buenos Aires connection. Only have a week on the ground? Stick to El Calafate and El Chaltén, and leave Ushuaia for another trip. The glacier boardwalks and the Fitz Roy trails are in different zones of Los Glaciares: treating both as one casual day out leaves little room for a hike, let alone weather.

These are suggested days, not a transport timetable. Check the connections between towns. El Chaltén is the park's northern walking base; El Calafate is the base for the glacier-area boardwalks. Arrange the road transfer between those bases around your lodging and trail days rather than assuming a glacier visit can be bolted onto a long Fitz Roy hike. Check actual flight or overland connections before booking Ushuaia. A short gap on the map says little about the journey.

When to go for Fitz Roy and when winter changes the plan

November to March is the stronger planning window for El Chaltén hiking. Los Glaciares calls May to September winter, and its visitor advice warns that weather changes in every season. Even in summer, check trail conditions and allow for obscured views. Put your most important walk early in the stay, so one wet or windy day doesn’t use up your only chance.

Patagonia shares Australia’s broad seasonal pattern. Fly out to escape a July winter and you’ll land in another one. If snow is the actual objective, skiing in Argentina belongs on a separate winter itinerary. Trying to use one week for sunny El Chaltén trails and a full ski holiday misses the seasonal point of both.

What to do at the glacier and on the El Chaltén trails

Glaciar Perito Moreno is in Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. Parque Nacional Perito Moreno is a separate national park, so search for Los Glaciares when booking the glacier visit. The glacier area's walkways include an accessible ramp route, assisted wheelchair provision and audio guides, according to National Parks. Give the boardwalk visit and the Fitz Roy hike their own plans.

For Fitz Roy, use El Chaltén as your trail base. Park advice says to stay on marked routes and carry water, food, a torch, sunscreen and warm waterproof clothing. Register before climbing or remote-area excursions at the visitor centre before El Chaltén or through the park's virtual route. De Agostini, Capri and Poincenot campsites require reservations. An Australian uni card won’t get you the Argentine student admission rate: you need an Argentine DNI and proof of enrolment at an Argentine institution.
