Using an Australian card and ATMs in Argentina

Pay in pesos with your Australian card. Before taking out cash, check both your bank’s fees and the ATM’s; Visa’s tourist rate is for eligible purchases, not necessarily withdrawals.

The short version

ING debit
ING charges AUD 0 for overseas purchases and withdrawals; operators may charge.
Wise debit
Wise: AUD 400 monthly ATM withdrawals without Wise charges; 2.69% on excess.
Foreign Visa
Eligible foreign Visa purchases get a preferential conversion; ATM rates vary.
Cash declaration
Declare AUD 10,000 or more in physical currency crossing Australia.

Pay for purchases in pesos with your Australian-issued card. The “dólar tarjeta” surcharge on Argentine-issued cards does not automatically apply. For cash, check the ATM screen even if your bank charges nothing: the machine can add its own fee, and withdrawal limits depend on it and your card.

What exchange rate does an Australian card get in Argentina?

For eligible purchases, Visa says its credit, debit and prepaid cards issued outside Argentina receive a preferential tourist conversion close to, but slightly below, the financial-dollar MEP rate. The preferential rate applies to purchases. Cash withdrawals and foreign Mastercard purchases may settle differently. The exchange rate on the card network is only part of the bill: your Australian issuer may add a foreign-transaction charge.

The “dólar tarjeta” quotation in Argentine currency news describes a separate Argentine-card situation. That 30% headline concerns Argentine cards, not an automatic charge on your Australian Visa at dinner. Compare the peso receipt with the settled AUD charge on your statement; the amount first shown as pending may not be the final conversion.

If a terminal asks whether to charge in Australian dollars or Argentine pesos, choose ARS unless the quoted AUD option demonstrably costs less. Visa calls the offered AUD conversion dynamic currency conversion: it may include a markup or additional charges, and you can decline it without declining the underlying card transaction. This choice does not remove your own issuer’s fees.

Which Australian debit cards avoid their own overseas fees?

ING Orange Everyday VisaAUD 0 ING international purchase feeAUD 0 ING international ATM feeA third-party machine’s charge
Macquarie Transaction Account MastercardNo Macquarie international purchase feeNo Macquarie overseas ATM feeOverseas ATM-operator charges; Macquarie reimburses only domestic operator fees

“Fee-free” means the card provider’s own fee. The Argentine ATM can still charge you, so check the screen before you press confirm. ING lists AUD 0 without a monthly-purchase condition; the machine’s surcharge remains yours to pay. Wise’s Australian ATM-fee threshold is AUD 400 per account per month.

How much cash can an Argentine ATM give you?

Your card limit, the machine’s per-operation limit and how much cash it holds all affect what you can take out. Fees vary too. Argentina’s central bank says fee-charging off-site terminals must show their charge and give you a chance to cancel. If the machine asks a high fee for a small withdrawal, cancel before confirming.

  1. Choose a cash amount in ARS and read the amount and any ATM charge on screen before confirming.
  2. Decline an offered conversion into AUD unless its displayed total actually beats the ARS option; declining conversion does not cancel the transaction.
  3. If the amount offered is too small or the fee too high, cancel before approval and try a different machine.
  4. Check the eventual AUD debit against the ARS dispensed and any separately displayed operator fee. A foreign-card purchase rate should not be used as a prediction of this cash transaction.

Should you carry pesos or US dollars?

Keep some pesos for when a card terminal is down or a tip cannot be added electronically. It’s a bit late to hunt for an ATM when the bill lands. Carry only the cash you need to limit theft risk. Smartraveller’s Argentina advice is the live Australian government safety reference. For a restaurant, tipping in Argentina explains the separate tip and cover-charge question.

If bringing foreign notes, remember the two border rules use different currencies. AUSTRAC requires a declaration for physical currency of AUD 10,000 or more, including its foreign-currency equivalent, when crossing Australia. Argentina’s customs authority ARCA describes sums below USD 10,000 as permitted in or out without the higher-cash process; a larger cash sum on entry needs its special declaration, while higher outward sums must go by bank transfer. Those are border thresholds, not a reason to carry that much cash for everyday purchases. For bag and street-theft precautions, see safety in Argentina for Australians.

How do you check an Argentine banknote?

Use the BCRA denomination and security-feature pages rather than an old photo someone forwarded. Its ARS 20,000 note, introduced in November 2024, has Juan Bautista Alberdi on the front and his childhood home on the reverse. Count notes and compare security details before you leave the point of payment or receive change. For cash planning across a longer trip, Argentina backpacking budget puts daily spending in context.

Questions Aussies ask

Will an Australian card get Argentina’s tourist exchange rate?

Yes. Eligible foreign-issued Visa purchases receive a preferential rate slightly below MEP under Visa’s policy. Cash withdrawals and Mastercard transactions may convert differently.

Are ING, Macquarie or Up ATMs free in Argentina?

As of September 2026, ING, Macquarie and Up list no overseas ATM fee of their own. Check the machine’s charge before confirming.

Is there a fixed ATM withdrawal limit for foreign cards in Argentina?

No single nationwide limit applies to foreign cards. Your bank limit, the machine limit and its cash stock determine what you can withdraw.

Should I choose pesos or Australian dollars at the card terminal?

Choose Argentine pesos unless the terminal’s displayed AUD option costs less. AUD conversion may include a markup.

What if an Argentine banknote looks wrong?

Compare its security features with the BCRA’s current banknote page before accepting it. The ARS 20,000 note shows Juan Bautista Alberdi.
