Working holiday jobs in Argentina for Australians

With Work and Holiday permission, look for harvest, ski, hospitality or teaching work. Get pay and paperwork straight before accepting; a tourist entry won’t cover local paid shifts.

The short version

Work and Holiday stay
Work and Holiday: 12 months maximum, six with one employer.
Mendoza harvest enquiries
Plan February–April enquiries; 2025 harvest progress ran 9 February–18 May.
Winter resort enquiries
Plan June–September enquiries; snow and opening dates vary.
Pay evidence
No verified net wage for seasonal or hostel jobs.
Employee ID
ANSES issues CUIL free; documents depend on immigration status.

Look for jobs in Mendoza’s grape harvest or at winter ski resorts. Tourist-facing hospitality and English lessons are other options. Sort work permission first: an advertised role, or even a bed in exchange for shifts, doesn’t make tourist entry a work permit. Start with the Argentine Work and Holiday visa for Australians: the Foreign Ministry publishes a stay of up to 12 months and a limit of six months with any one employer.

Which jobs fit each season and region?

Enquiry windowRegion and work to investigateWhat the evidence actually shows
February–AprilMendoza: grape picking, cellar work, wine tourismThe National Wine Institute published weekly vendimia (grape-harvest) progress from 9 February to 18 May in 2025. Weather and variety change the actual work dates.
June–SeptemberBariloche/Cerro Catedral, San Martín de los Andes/Chapelco, Malargüe/Las Leñas: instruction, hire, guest service, salesVisit Argentina names these resorts. A Cerro Catedral ski school advertised instructors, rental/customer service, administration and sales for 2026; instruction required certification or progress towards it. An advert is not an open vacancy today.
November–MarchBariloche, El Calafate, El Chaltén, Ushuaia: enquire about guest services, tour booking, kitchen or equipment hireThis is a planning window for Patagonian summer tourism, not a verified recruitment schedule. No region-wide 2026 vacancy or wage data was validated.
Year-round enquiriesBuenos Aires: hostel reception, language lessons, tourism-facing servicePlatform listings establish that hostel work exchanges exist, not that a particular host offers lawful paid employment or a wage.

For the harvest, choose between picking, cellar work and a visitor-facing role before you contact employers. They call for different skills and arrangements. The Mendoza grape-harvest jobs guide covers that season. At a resort, ask about the exact role and required qualification before spending money on travel; the ski-season jobs guide helps separate mountain jobs from a ski holiday. Snow doesn’t stick to a recruitment calendar.

English helps with guests, but you need enough Spanish to understand a contract and safety instructions. If you plan to teach rather than work behind a reception desk, compare institutes with independent lessons in teaching English in Argentina.

Can you work at a hostel for a free bed?

A work-exchange platform may advertise accommodation in return for reception, cleaning or bar shifts. A bed is compensation in kind. You still need the right work permission for those shifts. Before accepting an offer, get the hours, days off, meals, insurance and payroll arrangement in writing. If the host can’t explain your immigration and payment position, move on. Calling the shift “volunteering” won’t settle it.

Australian tourists may enter visa-free for up to 90 days, but tourism is a different category from Argentina's Work and Holiday permission. A paid job offer is not itself permission to start. The Work and Holiday programme allows incidental work during a holiday; it is not unlimited time with one employer.

What can a working holiday job pay?

There’s no verified September 2026 net wage here for hostel, grape-harvest, ski-resort or Patagonian summer work. Ask the employer for the rate rather than converting an old job-board estimate at today’s exchange rate. Get the gross rate and expected paid hours in writing. Ask about deductions, the payment date and any accommodation charge. If a job advert states USD, establish whether the actual payment is in USD or ARS and which conversion basis applies. Compare the resulting amount in AUD using the rate on the payment day.

Pay item to establish with the employerWhy it changes the amount you keep
Hourly, daily or monthly rate; ARS or USDA shift count is not a monthly income guarantee, and USD pricing need not mean USD payment.
Paid hours and cancellationsResort openings, weather and guest bookings can change the roster.
Payroll deductions and payment methodThe quoted gross amount need not be what reaches your account.
Accommodation and mealsA “staff bed” may be part of compensation, separately charged, or not offered.

Plan your backpacker budget in Argentina without relying on an unconfirmed wage.

How do you get paid legally by an Argentine employer?

ANSES, Argentina's social-security agency, says employees need a CUIL (work and social-security number) when starting salaried work. It issues a CUIL free, without an appointment, at an ANSES office. A foreign adult can present a foreigner DNI (national identity card). Without one, ANSES lists evidence tied to a Migraciones file and qualifying entry or residence status. A passport with tourist entry alone may not meet those requirements. Take your immigration paperwork to ANSES and ask which of its published document routes fits your status.

  1. Agree the job's tasks, hours, pay currency and gross rate with the employer.
  2. Take the work-authorisation documents relevant to your status to ANSES for the CUIL route if employed on payroll.
  3. Obtain the written payment terms before your first shift, including which account or method receives the pay and when.

If instead you invoice Argentine clients independently, ARCA's monotributo (simplified tax and social-contribution scheme for small contributors) still requires the appropriate immigration permission. ARCA's sequence is CUIT (tax identifier) and clave fiscal (tax login), electronic tax address, Registro Único Tributario (tax registry) with activities and addresses, then monotributo enrolment, invoicing and monthly payment. ANSES says a self-employed person already assigned a CUIT does not need a second CUIL. Work and Holiday status alone doesn’t establish that every holder can register for the scheme. Settle your status and invoicing route with ARCA before promising a client an invoice.

Can you keep an Australian remote job instead?

Remote services for an employer or clients domiciled outside Argentina sit in a separate immigration category from local Argentine shifts. Migraciones publishes a digital-nomad transitory residence for remote services to entities abroad, for up to 180 days with a possible similar extension. Its application text asks for a description of independent activities but also accepts employer evidence; an Australian PAYG employee should obtain a category decision from Migraciones rather than assume the permit automatically covers their arrangement. In Buenos Aires, its in-country instructions direct applicants to asesoramiento@migraciones.gov.ar; elsewhere, to the local Migraciones office. The in-country process is in person, not RaDEX.

Australian tax is separate from the immigration category. The ATO says Australian tax residents declare worldwide income, including income earned overseas, and a foreign income tax offset may be available if income is taxed abroad. Your citizenship, payroll destination and visa label don’t decide tax residence or Argentine payroll obligations on their own. Discuss your working location with your employer before taking the laptop overseas, then resolve the Australian and Argentine tax treatment for your circumstances; a tourist stamp won’t sort employer compliance.

Questions Aussies ask

Can Australians work in Argentina as tourists?

No. Visa-free tourist entry permits tourism, not paid local shifts. Get work permission before taking hostel, harvest, teaching or ski shifts.

When should I look for grape-harvest jobs in Mendoza?

Start enquiries for February–April, adjusting for the actual harvest. The National Wine Institute published 2025 progress from 9 February through 18 May.

Can I work for the same employer for my whole working holiday?

No. Work and Holiday rules allow up to six months with one employer during a stay of up to 12 months.

Do I need a CUIL to be paid by an Argentine employer?

Yes, ANSES requires a CUIL for salaried work and issues it free. Foreign applicants without a DNI need one of its listed immigration-document routes.

Can an Australian employee work remotely from Argentina?

Migraciones offers a transitory digital-nomad route for services to people or entities domiciled abroad. Ask Migraciones whether your PAYG employment qualifies; Australian tax residency and employer compliance are separate questions.
