Spanish schools in Buenos Aires: UBA, prices and practice

Pick your Spanish course around your stay, not just a weekly price. UBA’s Laboratorio de Idiomas teaches Spanish to foreigners and lists its October–December 2026 two-month course at a general rate of ARS 652,895 (about AUD 612). Vamos Academy offers 20-hour-a-week group classes. Compare dates and total hours if you’re only in Buenos Aires briefly.

Which Spanish school suits your time in Buenos Aires?

UBA’s Laboratorio de Idiomas runs Spanish as a second and foreign language in person and online. Its level courses follow the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), from introductory through advanced. The published calendar offers two-month courses starting in January, March, May, August and October, with three classes weekly; four-month courses start in March and August with two weekly classes. There is a written and oral placement test for learners who already know some Spanish. The test opens during enrolment periods. A published start month doesn’t mean you can sign up all month.

For a stay of a week or two, compare shorter private courses. Vamos Academy sells an intensive group product labelled 20 hours per week, with selectable durations from one to 50 weeks. Its checkout displays a price range across durations, so confirm the total for your chosen week. Check the total for a course starting on your arrival date, including any registration or materials charges. Classes help you get started; a cashier replying at full speed will test your listening soon enough.

Your school invoice and bank rate may tell a different story. UBA’s reduced fees are tied to specified student and residency categories; an Australian passport by itself does not qualify someone for a discounted rate. Should you study in Córdoba or Mendoza instead?

If Buenos Aires isn’t your base, suss out the Córdoba option. The SET Idiomas listing makes the workload clear: 20 lessons of 55 minutes, taught Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 13:00, with a class cap of six. That listing is through LanguageBookings rather than a final direct-school basket. Contact SET about the start date, what the administration fee covers and the amount payable in your chosen currency. Check the start date before paying through a reseller, especially if you’re travelling between cities.

In Mendoza, SP Spanish Courses advertises weekday groups of no more than five and includes materials with no advertised registration fee. Choose between 10-hour and 20-hour weeks depending on how much class time you want and whether you need afternoons free. Vamos Academy’s Mendoza offer is a 09:00–13:00 weekday schedule at USD 205 a week as published in September 2026. Compare actual class hours and start dates, not just the headline weekly price: a 10-hour course and a 20-hour course are different purchases.

How long until you can hold a conversation?

Four weeks in a 20-hour-a-week group give you 80 scheduled class hours. That’s time in class, not a guarantee of fluency. Practise arranging a meeting and explaining a problem in Spanish outside class too; the unscripted replies are where your listening gets a workout. UBA maps its levels to CEFR, so a placement test and a course level give you a clearer next step than a school’s promise to make you conversational by a particular Friday.

A week of group classes can fit a short stay; UBA’s two-month course takes a longer commitment. Use conversations outside class to find what you still miss in ordinary speech. If your goal is university study, UBA offers separate Spanish certification exams. For UBA degree admission, distinguish a language-course certificate from the separate CEA exam.

Where can you practise without another class?

An intercambio de idiomas is a language exchange: you practise Spanish with someone who wants to practise another language. Suggest equal time in each language and a topic, such as directions or your work. Otherwise you might spend the whole session chatting in the language you already know. In Buenos Aires, Meetup’s Welcome to Buenos Aires group lists expat and traveller events, although its listed events are not automatically language exchanges. Look for an event advertised as an intercambio and ask the organiser about the next meeting. Practise with whoever attends; an Australian get-together won’t necessarily switch to Spanish. What changes in Rioplatense Spanish?

In Buenos Aires you will hear Rioplatense Spanish. Vos is an everyday form of “you”, often where a course from another country might have taught tú. Practise a few useful pairs aloud: vos tenés instead of tú tienes (“you have”), and vos querés instead of tú quieres (“you want”). The local pronunciation of written y and ll can sound like English “sh”. Listen for it in calle and yo. You can learn these local sounds and forms alongside the Spanish you already know.

Che can be a familiar way of getting someone’s attention. Boludo can be friendly between people who know each other, but it also has a vulgar or disparaging meaning; leave it out of your first exchange with a stranger.
